Not to say that they're smart or stupid, but after the school kids election came out overwhelmingly for Obama I asked them why they voted the way they did. The Obama kids pretty much did it because it was the popular thing to do. Or even worse, for completey made up reasons. The McCain voters were amazingly articulate and aware of the policies that they were voting for.
Maybe if we were in a republican stronghold it would have been the other way around but it does bother me somewhat.

Diane, my students have been coming to class overly animated (that's being kind) for the few days before and after the election. I have a Muslim girl in one of my classes and one student stated emphatically that he could never vote for Obama because he's a Muslim. We've had some very trying days since...

Then there's the SS teacher who (rightfully so) reminded the students that the Electoral College still had to vote... that sparked a few heated arguements in my room about whether or not the election really is over or not.

Surprisingly, my kids are expressing their views on the issues... and there are many... and most are pretty accurate about the candidates and the issues at stake. Because this is a business tech class, they need to know how to write a block-style letter. I used the election as their writing prompt and on Wednesday they had to write a letter to whichever candidate won. They had to congratulate him, discuss an issue of concern to them, and thank him for his time. Most did a really good job expressing their concerns, mostly for immigration (this is NEW Mexico, after all).

It was funny, my 14 year old son found an Obama sign in the middle of the street so he and his friend were parading around town with it. I had to write him a note giving my permission for him to do it because the police kept pulling up to him questioning him about where he stole the sign from.
I do think it's great that the kids have been so excited about the election. I don't give them my opinion when I'm in a teacher mode but I just try to impress upon them that whomever they support, they should have reasons for doing so.

Kevin, it may be up to you and me to save the world. I am now convinced that Cheryl is in fact a Sith Lord and either controlling or being controlled by the dark side of the force. I am also convinced that the best cure for the darkside is to shed a little light saber upon it. I am charging the battery in mine as we speak. I have enlisted the aid of hourds of Energizer Bunnies, also armed with light sabers. I figure that they will never run out of juice and of course the nature of bunnies suggests that we will never run out of troops either. If we don't outnumber them now, we will soon. One of the bunnies I have already promoted to Field Marshall because he has a military and combat background. He, in fact, was the Killer Bunny in " Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. I see no way we can fail.

We need to send Doug and Dinsdale Piranha or maybe Cardinal Richelieu to Pixley to exorcise the Dark Forces from Cheryl. I can hear her now; "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition." "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

No Mikey, I'm sorry, but the Spanish Inquisition is more of a right wing technique. However, nailing someone's head to the coffee table might be considered more centrist, so call the Piranas and see if they are available.

Anyway, is there anyone out there with a Light Saber that may care to join The Bunny Brigade? Our recruiters are standing by with nice juicy carrots on sticks.

Ha, I've heard tell shes a witch. She turned me into a newt (gingrich) she did. Well, I got better. As I was hiding behind a (burning) bush or a rock or something and thinking how to promote sarah palin in '12 by talking God into "opening a door for her," I heard a song coming in on the wind and I got better.

Maybe she will too. If she would just open her mind and listen.

The only door God will be opening for Sarah Palin is marked "Exit"; hope she lets it hit her in the ass on the way out.

All this talk of the light and the dark reminds me that "Lucifer," in Latin, means "light bringer" (deriving from "lux" (light) and "ferre" (to bring).

I'm just sayin'.

Me, I like the twilight.

Speaking less metaphorically, there have been times I have thought that the Bush Administration was a liberal plot to discredit conservatives, but actually I think the truth is that the Bushies are not conservatives or liberals; they are just selfish, morally bankrupt souless vampires and con artists who sought and found a way for themselves and their friends to suck the government for 8 years, all the while convincing gullible people that they were something they were not. They just talk a good game. They are gone for now (at least I am cautiously optimistic that they are), but I also wonder where and when they will rise from the dead again and whether we will recognize them. (I said "less metaphorically," not "non-metaphorically"...)

Mikey,
I was hoping her 15 minutes of fame were up. Then when it came out that she thought Africa was a country and not a continent, I kind of figured she was a shoe in to be the next gop presidential candidate in '12.

Nice quote Eileen...

While we are on the subject of Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them...
How is one of the first to call attention to the lies, Al Franken, doing?

Time for a recount...

Before Recount, GOP Smearing Minnesota Sec Of State
By Zachary Roth - November 11, 2008, 5:00PM
The recount in the Minnesota Senate race hasn't even begun yet, but already the GOP is working to delegitimize it in advance, by smearing the man who will run it as a partisan Democrat.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has been distributing to reporters a three-page "backgrounder" that attacks Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, a Democrat, for having spoken at the Democratic convention this summer, and for having "led a voter registration coalition that included ACORN," among other alleged sins.

In the first vote count, Republican incumbent Norm Coleman currently holds an edge of around 200 votes over Democratic challenger Al Franken, though that number may continue to dwindle as more votes are counted. Either way, the margin is easily close enough to require a recount under state law, which will begin next week under Ritchie's supervision.

Despite the backgrounder's sometimes hysterical compilation of anti-Ritchie greatest hits -- it claims that "the Communist Party USA Wrote Encouragingly Of His Candidacy," citing an unsourced line from a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribue -- there's no evidence that Ritchie has ever used his role as the state's top elections administrator to advantage Democrats.

But that likely misses the point of the GOP gambit, which appears to be to cast public doubt on the integrity of the recount process, thereby bolstering Coleman's claim that's he's the rightful winner and that a recount is unnecessary -- just the strategy pursued by George Bush's campaign in Florida in 2000.

Indeed, Coleman's shrinking lead in the first count has already prompted him to try to question the ongoing vote counting. A lawyer for the campaign yesterday told The Politico: "We're not going to sit idly by, while mysterious, statistically dubious changes in vote totals take place after official government offices close."

THE NEXT PHASE BEGINS IN MINNESOTA.... With the razor-thin margin in the Senate race in Minnesota, the first phase in the Republican strategy was to argue that a statewide recount was a waste of time. It was unpersuasive. So, the second phase is getting underway.

The recount in the Minnesota Senate race hasn't even begun yet, but already the GOP is working to delegitimize it in advance, by smearing the man who will run it as a partisan Democrat.

In a remarkable coincidence, just as the national Republican Party is going on the offensive, the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal is also going on the attack, using similar talking points, and going after Mark Ritchie for having a tangential connection to ACORN and (cue scary music) MoveOn.org. Ironically, the Journal's editorial board condemns Franken, Democrats, and "left-wing allies" for "waging a full-scale public pressure campaign."

And to top things off, Republicans have launched a new online resource to "keep watch on what they call 'shenanigans' perpetrated by Democrats as the Minnesota Senate recount proceeds."

If you think all of this is starting to sound a bit like Florida in 2000, we're on the same page.
