I suppose it depends on how old you were in the 70's...in reality, the 60's and what people thought of as 60's styles really lasted a few years into the 70's. Believe me, in the fall of 1971 when I started classes at Ball State, the Hippie era was in full force, and continued through my graduation in 1975...things changed after that. The Disco era was emerging, and THAT'S when things got really ugly. I remember Disco being really popular in the late summer of 1978.
It's also kind of curious...skirt length seems to go up and down with the economy.

I was thinking that too... but it's also weird that in a bad economy (down) that skirt lengths, well... lengthen. Think in terms of shortage of money, shortage of materials, so that they lengthen seems kinda strange.

They DID rise, dramatically, back in 1972 when the Dow broke 1,000. I was there, working for the Phila Stock Exchange when it happened... wearing a very short skirt!

I noticed in the past 10 years hosiery sales went down too so get ready for ankle length skirts ladies ....Also another reason for hosiery sales declining is that the Rockettes bought all of them in every store in the U.S.

The movie Saturday Night Fever was popular when the Disco era began. the soundtrack album to the movie was more popular than the fil. The movie was nasty, too much sexual graphics....Disco sucked! I remember most of the recording artists turned their style of music wether it was rock and roll, hard rock, or country to Disco. For example Dolly Parton "Baby I'm Burning", Kink's "Superman",
Rod Stewart "Do You Think I'm Sexy', The Rolling Stones "Miss You" all Disco tunes....I wonder if Arlo got suckered into recording a Disco tune back then...Hmmmmm.... "find out on the next Myths and Legends"

What made Saturday Night Fever was John Travolta. He's so cute! Watching him made you ignore the disco music lol. I think they reason hosiery sales went down is cuz they are an instrument of torture. If I need to wear hose I'll cheat & wear knee-highs or leggings. So much more comfortable as hose are so uncomfortable on me...

SNF is one of my favorite movies from that time.* Whatever its flaws, it got under my skin, it resonates with me and I find myself sucked in whenever I flip past it on TV.

I think "Life on Mars" (ABC show, for those who don't watch TV) evokes the early '70s really well. I was in high school so it was, of course, a less than ideal time (add to that I was one of maybe 10 McGovern volunteers in a school of 500+ Nixon supporters), but looking back on it from a distance is kind of fun.

*Not my favorite movie of all time. That would be Groundhog Day. Just so we're clear.
