Will my family then think I'm crazy (which they already do because I listened to all three versions of Alice's Restaurant yesterday) and not send me off to do the dishes ?......I have a vision of an anti-brillo movement starting up today at the dinner table.

As I manage a shopping mall, I have to work tomorrow and our staff is having a pot luck feast and listening to Arlo's Alice's Restaurant. Many of my staff are too young to remember it, but some are not. Some listening to Arlo's great story at noon on Thanksgiving is a tradition in my house and others here so we are sharing with our younger counterparts tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from Oklahoma! May your feasts be plentiful and full of love and great music.

I guess it's time to 'fess up.
The reason that I never accept an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner is pretty plain, and simple.
For eighteen years we had played Alice's Restaurant while having Thanksgiving dinner.
After we broke up, I never played it again.
And I knew that if I accepted an invite to dinner, they would not be playing it either.
So I politely declined.
This year was different.
I listened to it in the AM.
Got past all the old memories that it brought up, and went out to a meet and greet at my Bio Bro's house after they were done with their dinner.
And brought home lots of left-overs.
Maybe next year I will be able to actually enjoy dinner with them, instead of afterwards, and home alone.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. I had one that really couldn't be beat. My Nana made a turkey with all the fixings. Oh, it was delicious. Then my dad and I went to my room and watched Alice's Restaurant. It's been a good day.

Welcome to the new folks on here. I turned in FM 96.5 in my moms car to hear the songs & they forgot to play it. Mom is driving down the road & can't figure out how to switch the radio to the other channel that plays it fm 106.9 in the Norfolk area. So she stops at a school & gets out & has me tune it in. I never could figure out how to get all the oldies & classic rock stations set in her pre-sets so she'll have good stations tuned in. It's tradition to drive my folks crazy with the song on the raduo...

We had turkey and all the trimmings for our Turkey Day in Turkey. A bunch of us rented the back of a small cafe and had an American caterer make our dinner. I tried to translate Alice's for the Turkish staff, but I'm pretty sure a lot was lost in translation. We finally told them it was a traditional American folk song for our holiday.

Sounds like a dinner that couldn't be beat, as Arlo would say...

I hope everyone's Tday went well.

We went to our hometown and the kith & kin wanted to go out for dinner.
We always end up traveling on the actual Holiday. I knew I wouldn't be able to start my tradition and watch "Alice's". Mom doesn't (or didn't) have a player of any kind. No DVD or VHS, so I didn't bring it with me.

What I did do, was take the song with us on the road, and I put it in starting at the exact spot where we heard it the very first time. (Between Castroville & Hondo..Tx) It was awesome because we didn't have to back up and pull over due to the station fading to hear the end of it.
So from now on, thats the place where it's going "come around again"

I asked Hubby to make sure it worked the morning we left (new truck wasn't sure about the CD player) So he puts in...and cranked it up. Now, mind you, it's 7:30 Thanksgiving morning. New folks just moved in next door. heh!

On a side note...we went out for a Thanksgiving dinner that could have been beat....with a stick! They were out of Turkey dinners and what we ended up with....well lets just say...wasn't great, but the company was great so we didn't care. It is the first Thanksgiving without Turkey. One year it was turkey TV dinners, but hey..at least it was turkey ya know? LoL

So T'Day '08 has been put to rest...I'm home safe & sound and will be watching Alice whilst I unpack this morning. (We did get Mom and DVD/VHS combo unit, so next year we can watch it on the day.)

So good to hear that everyone had a wonderful time. I did too, in spite of the food that could have come from Whitehall Street.

We were invited to share Thanksgiving with the family of our daughter Laura's boyfriend. We had met his parents before, and they're really lovely people. We all think Laura and Mike are perfect for each other, we love their son, they love our daughter, so it was time for us to meet the rest of the family. We'd previously dragged Mike to a family wedding in Minnesota in April so he could meet our side of the family.
We shared Thanksgiving with some of the nicest and most generous people; we felt like we were with family right away and we really enjoyed spending the time with them. We had a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat, there was a wild touch football game in the back yard, a couple of football games on the tv, a baby crawling on the floor, a three year old boy and a five year old girl. I knew the kids were going to be there, so I tuned and brought my child-sized autoharp along. When Natalie, the 5 year old, seemed restless, I got out the autoharp, gave her some basic instruction, and walked away, because she is the type of kid that wants to figure things out for herself. She happily played with it for 45 minutes...that child is going to be asking for an autoharp at some point!
After dessert was eaten and dishes were done, a nice roaring fire was built in the backyard portable fireplace. (it was about 45 degrees outside!) We came out to sit, the kids roasted marshmallows, and it eventually turned into a sing-along. I had Jim retrieve my full-sized autoharp from the car (you never know when you might need an autoharp!!) so we had musical accompanyment, too! They started with This Land is Your Land (they chose, not me!) which I thought was appropriate. It was a song they'd taught to Natalie, so she could sing along, too.
It was a wonderful day with lovely people...I've got no complaints with my daughter joining their family!

Sounds like a great time & family. Forgot to mention we had dinner with the Fuzz lol. My cousins daughters hubby is a fuzz & Mike & I & my folks went to their house to have dinner with them & my cousin & his wife & family. In fact the fuzz son-in-law had to leave early cuz he had to go catch the bad guys even tho it was a holiday. A good time was had by all...
