Well, supposedly, they can make pop corn pop! If they can do that in a matter of seconds, imagine what they might do to people on a cellular level.

This is a hoax...the corn popped because they've got a microwave magnetron tube aimed at the popcorn from under the table.

I suppose if it does to brain cells what it does to popcorn, using a cellphone might be a mind expanding experience.

Hoax or not, I still don't like 'em. It could explain how Bush got in for two terms.

I'm with Captain Zap......they've changed me (us) somehow. I understand that there are valid pros and cons, but I'm talking about something more fundamental. Until I got my first cell phone about 5 years ago, I had at first a resistence toward them, then an ambivalence. Now I'm completely addicted to my phone.....if I forget to bring it with me, I feel sort of "naked" without it......it can sometimes be a real pain in the ass!

A lot of us grew up admiring Dick Tracy's watch camera phone...and to have that kind of technology available in my pocket is kind of amazing...I'm not saying it's a great thing for people to have the ability to call me anytime, almost anywhere on land, but in an emergency, we're sure glad we do have cell phones. Being a woman who frequently drives long distances alone, I like having the ability to call someone immediately if my car has a problem. In many cases, it's also a safety thing...it can be scary to sit at the side of the road, not knowing who is going to be your good samaritan, and whether they actually have good intentions. It's better to know AAA is on the way!

I don't use mine much unless I'm on the road or on vacation...I sure don't spend any time chatting on mine. Most calls are under 2 minutes, and I don't send many text messages. I've got a message on my home phone that refers people to my cell phone, so if people really need to get ahold of me, they can.

Well, in a way, they sort of do fry your brain. I was watching a story on the news. The reporter was on the street and every third person or so walking by was talking on a cell phone. My better half said, "WTF do they have to say that's so important?" More than likely, nothing.

I was in the front section of a small bookstore a while ago when a woman took out her cell phone, dialed a number and said, "I'm in the front of the store. Where are you?"

It's been well documented that they can be a distraction in a car. States have passed laws limiting or banning their use while driving. A few years back, a locally well known freelance writer drove into a tree and was killed. Rumour has it that they were on the cell phone when it happened.

Yep! I agree. They can be very helpful in an emergency. But otherwise, I still say that they fry your brain, figuratively or literally.

And unfortunately, a major group of people who have cell phones glued to their ears all the time have very young, tender and developing brains.

maybe they fry your brain with whatever or not... could be...lots of stuff does...i live near one of the biggest power grids in Cambridge... and I know.... uh....yup....we'll blame that....

they're okay for a couple of minutes of necessary contact, of instead of a landline...
you're in one place movin around talkin on the phone and you miss so much of where you are... like tryin to be in two places at once or more... or running away from what's goin on around you.... makes the world weirder...

I can't imagine not having a cellphone and am just sorry I didn't have one when Eric was little. It would have saved a lot of aggravation with the school principal.

Instead of a landline where I have to pay for long-distance calls, I can talk to my sister, kids, friends, step-mom, everyone important, without accruing any charges!

I certainly don't worry about it frying my brain, especially since most of mine is probably already half-baked anyway. There's probably nothing "good for you" in this world anyway... and having had 2 heart attacks, well...

I got one, and use it when I need it.
However, with all the dingdongs I see on the drive to and from work yapping away, often before they cut me off, I too wonder about their safety. Then, there is the ettiquette issue. I get people in my store all the time that walk in yapping on the things while we are attempting to wait on them. It's annoying to say the least. Although I am getting more used to it, this is worse when they have one of those Borg implant bluetooth earpeice things, because they come in yapping and you think they are talking either to you or themselves. I mean I remember a time when people walking down the street or sidewalk that were talking to themselves got locked up.

And Terrie, having a half-baked brain is better than having a fried one, at least in terms of cholesterol.
