It's part of a full-court press information distortion zone being created to divide up the Democrats, particularly to push the tea party away from even considering left-wing candidates. You are going to see several programs such as the JFK mockumentary planned for the History Channel designed to split the millenials (who hate the boomers outright) and pick up any of the old John Birch Society types and aim them directly at the West Coast led Obama supporters who very early, and too brazenly began to attack. Reagan used similar culture blitzkriegs effectively.

On one hand, it's funny. On the other, this is an attack on the belief systems of a subculture not dissimilar to the attacks from the Dawkin's led atheist brigade on world religions with Christianity in America a particular focus.

Stay on message: health care reform, jobs, ramping down MIC spending overseas. They are right about one point: we can't borrow our way out of debt. Stay away from personal attacks on Palin and her crew. That will bite you in the ass. Attack the nonsense in their positions. Don't give them cause to cohere.

...as for the religion thing, i have said how i feel about it (something i struggled with for a long long time) ...i am grateful for everyone and everything that has managed to in some way help me sort through it. deciding for myself. why i have brought it up here recently (i do believe there was a reciprocal thing going on there as well, not a problem,,,as i think i understand that place) was so that any of my friends who visit here (some who i am pretty sure would feel differently on some things) instead of tap dancing around some issues (as in, "shhh, not so loud, so and so is present...they might hear!"), i wanted to be able to say it, even if it would dissappoint (?)

anyway! and sort of on that note (?), my thoughts too on the subject of (as they seemed to have veered this way) mixing politics and religion is that it tends to be an especially manipulative game. my thoughts! (a person who was raised in a religious but completely a-political environment (in some ways i feel very fortunate about that...but that is two or three 'nother stories!) ...and now sees how the entanglement of the two is....very VERY weird!!!

After getting over the initial "how f!*#ing stupid can people be", ROTFL because it was just so ridiculous a premise, I thought that the article was sort of pointing all of the aforementioned out (in a more reserved manner). I believe that, given the estimated number of 400,000 Woodstock attendees (and even adding in the 55,000 Monterey Pop Fest concert goers), the odds would be against most of them becoming Wall Street executives. Given that most of the positive aspects of the last century were either embraced or started by the Woodstock generation (ecological issues, the peace movement, multitudes of equality and tolerance issues, fair trade, etc., etc.) I'd say that if there is blame to be bestowed, it would be elsewhere.

Somewhere, in the last thirty years, the world seems to have become a crueler, more self-centered place than it was for that brief glimmer of hope back in the 60s & early 70s. Not everywhere. Some things have gotten better. But sometimes it seems to me that some things have gone way to "the dark side".

Jerry Garcia once said that the 60s was sort of like seeing a door open just a crack, with a beautiful light shining out from it. And just when you reached out to open the door wide, "BAM!", it slammed shut as if to say, "That's all you get! Just a peek!"

@agnes: It is usually dangerous for anyone to lead a force against people's belief systems, be they BigCosmicMuffin, HairyThunderer or Flying Spaghetti Monster. Done for political purposes, it serves to multiply by division as Master Bush's Darth Vader explained. Values-laden messages are very potent.

These folk are purposefully setting up a "dem damm hippies" meme in the media. It's been done before and it worked well. This time they fear that Obama has managed to undo what they did and

a) they need scapegoats for the damage they've done to the economy

b) they know the tea party movement is unpredictable. They count on the South to be solidly with them but can be confounded by the fact that Southern rebels of the time were closet hippies (tend to have the same agrarian/family/let'itallhangout values) in principle.

c) need a creeping strategy of planting discord because the electorate (hell, everyone) is sensitized to the tactics of behavioral manipulation used for the last eight years and at strength in the last campaign. In short, nobody trusts a thing they say, fox says, msnbc says or cnn and that makes it harder to use their usual blitzkrieg media tactics.

They have to plant the seeds two seasons ahead to have the nasturtians in place before they send the 'zealous reporters' stomping through the nasties. Articles like that, the generation zero series, the JFK movie and whatever else they can find to get the closet hippies to stay in the closet and away from the voting booths will be played at increasing frequency this year and in early 2012.

The key is frequency and amplitude of a message. Set the meaning of the symbols in advance (eg, soldiers good; hippies bad) or any false dichotomy guaranteed to get a few vocal promoters then keep hitting the buzz button and ANY population can be steered as long as you keep them distracted.

for me, sorting out the the religious thing had nothing to do with a political agenda.
for me it was a separate entity to try and decipher...and then there is the political thing!!
