I hate it when I blurt out "Have a nice (or even worse, great) day" because I don't know what else to say. Usually it's said to people I don't know who are getting off the elevator. I've been trying to say instead, "It was nice talking with you," or "Goodby," but sometimes it just comes out anyway. Makes me remember disco and smiley faces. Ick.

Anyone else a Judith Martin (Miss Manners) fan? That lady has manners down to a science, and always has good, practical reasons for observing the social graces that go way beyond "because you're supposed to." She also gives good advice you on how to use good manners to really zap someone acting crudely. Besides, her column usually is just a hoot. Is my age showing? Nah, I liked her a long time ago, too. I liked Miss Manners, except that we did differ on our ideas of the proper way to dress for some occasions. Our paper stopped running the questions and answers, though, which was my favorite part of the column, so I kind of lost interest.

Hey, Muffy, I think you said it very well. Even before Miss Manners, we had Captain Kangaroo telling us to "mind our Ps and Qs." RB, absolutely the grocer should say thank you. No, carrying excellent produce is not enough. It is the grocer's job to carry good produce--however, it is also the grocer's job to create a pleasant atmosphere that makes you want to come back again (we call it "establishing rapport").
Cea, totally agree on the "have a nice (great) day" or, even lamer, "have a good one" (one what??)--just wanna bite my tongue when I hear it slip out of my mouth.

I think Bob Dylans a good example of non-manners. He wear's it well. But, like I said, I am a HUGE Becker fan. Anyone that cynical is okay, in my book. Even John has his moments.....<img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

Well, it's mostly that I didn't want to sound like I was attacking RB at a personal level, and wasn't sure if I had. If it didn't come across that way to anyone else, then OK.

I loved Miss Manners too, although it's been YEARS since I've read her column. They haven't carried it much in the local papers.
Manners as such seem to me to be mostly about how to get along with one another as a society; about acknowledging one's own and each other's right to be respected and appreciated. And there are indeed very good reasons for most of those social niceties -- not least of which is how to get around punching someone who's being a total jerk, while still getting one's point across and maintaining one's dignity intact. (You punch the jerk, you bring yourself down to his/her level. Outclass them however, and your win is total. Heh heh heh.)
