Thanks, Larry, deer hit stories were getting to me, I have hit one once & still feel guilty, also, I was afraid of this thread degenerating into, "Roadkill Highliights" and, I know you east coasters have a variety of roadside fauna....

I was just thinking of another thing that gets me everytime, but it is one of those "had to be there" kind of moments I think. I was hanging out with my mom watching The Beatles Anthology movies when they first came out, and on the end of one of the tapes the song "One After 909" came on and my mom - being a little hard of hearing - says, what are they saying? The one eyed banana man? Anyways, I thought I would die from laughing.

You guys don't have roadkill out there? One thing that tickled my funnybone..the dark side of my funnybone, I guess, was when we drove up to Bethel with Rob and his then-girlfriend. They brought along Roadkill Bingo, which is a pretty amusing game in a macabre sort of way. You can make your own, too..don't have to buy anything.

not much else, besides deer, that isn't domesticated, wanders onto roads, here, well, except for areas of LA.....

what? there's no skunk out west? no armadillo? no coyote? (surely coyotes run around on the roads, don't they?) not even no turtles nor squirrels?
why? is they sort of critters more southerly-easterly or sumpin'?

now that we're here at roadkillorama as feared, who does do the song "dead skunk in the middle of the road", anyway?

True story: The company I work for gives an employee 6 sick/personal days a year to use when sick or for doctors visits or other personal stuff. When used they are considered an unexcused absence.
Our attendance policy is set up so that if a person has 6 occurences (ie unexcused absences) in a year they are terminated.
Consquently, if we use our company provided sick day "benefit" a day at a time we will be terminated. I guess it's more stupid than funny, but it makes me shake my head every time I think of it.

No armadillos, for sure, only rarely have I ever seen a road-kill skunk, Im sure there are coyotes, in high desert, but they don't cross roads, I guess....Lotsa squirrels, in town here, very few squished, though

Possums or racoons? I thought everyone had them.

there was one year around here ('91, maybe?)when it seemed like the squirrels were bent on mass self-destruction. they were getting run over in droves -- and i do mean droves. it was pretty gross, although it reminds me of a story about someone's dark funny bone being tickled. a woman i know was choking with laughter as she told me of a squirrel she's passed that had been completely and repeatedly flattened -- except for its tail, which continued to stand straight up in the air as if at attention. shades of 'bambi meets godzilla' ... which, btw, is indisputably a classic, imo.

i've seen news stories about coyotes scavenging in the outskirts of l.a.. maybe it's just your own neighborhood that lacks them, bump? heh heh heh ... but as pat said, aren't racoons and possum absolutely everywhere?

On the subject of roadkill, in the summer of 1982, my wife and I were driving from New Jersey to Bar Harbor Maine for a week long camping vacation. All along the route from NJ to ME we encountered dead skunks along the road, and I noticed that they all seemed to be facing north as they lay there in their deadness. I explained to my wife that they all must be heading to a dead skunk convention, perhaps even in Maine. (Yes, I was weird even back then) To this day if we happen to see alot of roadkill, the convention theme comes up in conversation.

Did anyone ever hear the Canadian group "The Arrogant Worms" sing their song "Mounted Animal Nature Trail"??? It's kinda funny! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>
