We always did it as kids. It's OK to post 'em now. The statute of limitations for this criminal offense has to have expired by now.

My favorite was the old "Jose" trick. Heck, that one could come under the heading of criminal conspiracy.

You get a bunch of friends to call the same phone number, once every hour or so, & ask for Jose. They'll be told that they have the wrong number & that there's nobody there by the name of Jose.

At the end of the night, get another friend to call the same number & say, "Hi, this is Jose. Any messages for me?"

I pulled one at work about 12 years ago on 2 guys who couldn't stand the sight of one another. Let's call 'em Dave & Rich...coz that was their real names.

I called Dave's extension, quickly put him on hold, dialed Rich's extension, & then conferenced Dave in. If they both pick up at once, this'll be a beauty, I thought.

"Hello."

"Hello."

"Uh..this is Rich."

"Rich. This is Dave. What's up?"

"Nothing. [pause] What's up with you?"

"Nothing." [long pause]

"Then what the fuck did you call me for??"

"What??? You called me, asshole!"

You can imagine the rest.

You can also play pranks when you're on the receiving end of a call. How many of you knew that?

Way back when my daughter was involved in Girl Scouts, a local news reporter who lives in the neighborhood also had a daughter in Girl Scouts. This woman was very active in Girl Scouts. She called the house one night when I answered.

She said who she was & I recognized her name & her voice instantly. She spoke very clearly & distinctly, just like she was reporting the news.

Before she could say what she wanted, I cut in & said, "When will the media leave me alone? When all the evidence is in, I'll be acquitted!!"

I used to say stuff like that to my older son when he was little. I was going nuts and needed mental stimulation.

Is the refigerator running? Ya better go catch it. It took until he was 4 to "get it".

I hadn't thought about that in years. He's 26 now & will graduate from med school in NYC.

Ah, my son the doc.

I'm still nuts & need mental stimulation.

Back in the early '70's, a guy I went to community college with pulled a variation of the "Jose" prank. Only he did it to the White House!

There was a business moving out of the complex that our college was in that had to take out a plate glass window to remove some equipment. As a consequence their place, with two phone lines, was left unattended. Free phone access + college students = lots of "free" long distance calling! My classmate pondered, "Hmmmm! Who can I call?" I told him that I'd heard that the serial number on the old "Hundred Dollar Bill" rolling papers was the area code and phone number for the White House. Somehow we managed to find one (Gosh! That was tough on a campus in the early '70's!). He dialed the number and sure as...well, you know what, it was the White House. After his second call back, to see if there had been any calls for him, he managed to get connected to Nixon's press secretary's (Ronald Zigler's) assistant! Probably would've gotten Zigler, but he was out of town that day! Ahhh! Those were the days!

Oh wow. They claim that in Sugarloafs 70's hit "Don't Call Us We'll Call You" (their other hit was "Greeneyed Lady") the number dialed in the song was supposedly the number of the white house lol...
