I like Arlo's cover of Gates Of Edan too, but I also like his version of When the Ships Come In.

I can't say I've heard all the covers that you have mentioned, but I have heard a few.
Most I've heard have been heartless, dreary lifeless horrible covers, but there are some really good ones.

I liked Jimmy Hendrix cover of All Along The Watch Tower, He Knew what he was singing and he had the talent to give it what it was worth.

But I've got to say the Best Dylan covers I've heard are all on one Album ay the one person, Odetta Holmes. Odetta sings Dylan.
I found it with out looking, I was ging through the Dylan CDs one time and spotted it, I'd never heard of her before and I only pick it up because I don't have many albums by woman Artist and I wanted to balance things out. When I put it on, man I was rooted, I didn't take it out of the player for a solid week.

But there is a track on there that I've never hear Dylan sing, it isn't on any album I have, even the boots:- Long time Gone. I keep looking but haven't found it yet.

I'll tell you another Dylan cover by a woman that is excellent!!!!!

Joan Baez with the the Earl Scruggs review doin' Love is Just a Four Letter Word (its the only recording of it I know of but I thought I might inspire some other Dylan fans to speak up on there favorites as well!) It is off of an album called Earl Scruggs and Friends (an album I wore out a few copies of when I was a youngster buck).It has Doc Watson , the byrds a fellow named Gil Tyral (I believe its memory here) doin a Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Synthesizer hooked in, old Bobby Z hisself doin' Nashville Skyline witrh them Scruggs boys and Randy Lynn doin Black Mountain Rag with interviews of his High School teachers in the back (its not a fox pass people its a Faux Pas, so if you go up to a man and say thats the ugliest man I've ever seen in my life and he says that is no man that is my wife, you have made a terrific Faux Pas! When it went to CD it was backed with Nashville Airplane on the same disk (My exposure to Lester Flatt singing Lika A Rolling Stone)!

The Mouse and the Traps was a Texas 60's band I heard of when I visited my cousin down on the Texas Bayou in HousTex back in 67. I learned of Fever Tree, Thirteenth Floor Elevators (notoriously famous underground band) and Moving Sidewalks (Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top) at the time. The song I refer to, Public Execution was a rework (sort of) of Like a Rolling Stone (If you amazon it they say positively 4 Street, don't believe em). THe Lenny Kaye fellow from Patti Smiths band put it on a classic compilation of of 60's Garage music called "the first artsy era of psychdelic rock (AKA Nuggets)" back in 72. (I had that vinyl once)! The Flying Burritos Brothers I mention is what happened to the band immediately following Gram Parsons and Sneaky Petes departure.

Another Dylanesque: Let it out, Let it all Hang out By the Hombres! more Dylanesque, I mentioned somewhere I liked to watch Glen Cambells TV show and my favorite was when they had John Hartford. I bought his albums at the time when RCA was telling him he could record if he soundded like Dylan. So,, Corn Cob Blues is a good one or Category Stomp, but my favorites from the period are all John, Tall Buildings and I've heard That Tear Stained Monologue you do there by the door before you go.

Oh well, enough foolishness!

Most ethereal version of Hey Joe (I know, I ask myself why as well): Gotta be by The Cryin' Shames complete with the felt tip stick rolling heavy Zildian cymbal intro (or Faux Gong) followed by the Wah Wah Pedal synthetic Sitar. Good times, huh!!!! Where is my sunglasses! Sugar and Spice (and all things nice) sucked though!!!

Gene Clark with the Gosdin Bros. Only Colombe, I assume right after he left the Byrds. I saw him at the OKC Zoo right before he died He was playing solo acoustic wearing Tony LLama boots, Cut off blue jeans,tie dyed shirt and Stetson and man he put everything he had into singin them songs! I think he died with in six months of that. Here is to the late great Gene Clark!!

I'm sure I heard three covers of that but I can only remember two at this time.
Love and Hendrix. Both very differant, I think Hendirx's version suited the song better, but I do like Love's version though there's is very Psycidelic, though all there stuff is.

My favorite version of "Hey Joe" is not from the '60's, but from the 1978 Roy Buchanan album Live in Japan (much better than his studio version, laced with pyrotechnic overkill at the behest of a manager who thought it would help sell records).

On this version, Roy's usual bland singing is actually quite effective, conjuring up an image of an impassive, remorseless killer. The song is slow in tempo as the tension is building, with Roy's guitar providing the sound of gunshot & then of a woman screaming. As the song is ending, it morphs into a sad instrumental reading of "Shenandoah" before blasting into a few bars of "Foxy Lady" (with drummer Byrd Foster on vocals) to close it all down.

Recommended for fans of the song, or of great guitar playing.

Yes, I did, in the Phil Carson bio of Roy. People tried to get the two to meet, too, but it never came off. Woulda been interesting if they coulda met, Hugh betcha.

Jim Pons played bass for the Leaves, got a job with the Turtles (Pons-Barbata, pretty good rhythm section). Had a hit (or two) with a bullit. Played Trish Nixon's coming out party at the White House. Followed Flo and Eddie to the Mothers. Played the Seattle Music Festival with the Vanilla Fudge, Doors and Led Zeppelin and stayed at the Edgewater Inn at the time of the infamous Mudshark incident.

I always liked the Turtles present the Battle of the Bands!

Rarely do I anticipate a release of music but rarely does Ry Cooder put one out! I have been counting days and finally got the thing! Chavez Ravine, that Ry, he only knows the cutting edge (well what i think is cutting edge) He crazy!
