Arlo saved this concert from being a total bust! It was in a beautiful venue - a hillside estate south of San Francisco.

The outdoor concert was a bit of a disappointment. At the beginning of the show, Judy Collins said what a special surprise they all had cooked up for the encore. Unfortunately, Judy Collins was not in good form (voice off key at times and forgetting words to songs). Despite the fact that it was outdoors in a country setting, she wore these cheesy-looking Hollywood outfits - black sequins during the first half and white satin in the second half. Tom Rush was okay, not great; Eric Anderson, might as well have been singing in the shower for all the contact he had with the audience.

But, Arlo Guthrie ROCKED! People laughed until they had tears in their eyes when he told his stories. We all sang an Elvis song together, which was a terrific moment. He was the only one that actually got more than a polite reaction from the audience. Arlo was very nice about signing autographs for folks in the concession area during the intermission (concession was poorly organized, too - bad traffic control, so most people couldn't even get to the table).

The pace of the whole concert was so off - at times i was gazing up counting stars just waiting for the current segment to be over. So, only 1/4 of the concert was worth seeing - the Arlo quarter.

There were no encores.

Ah, but NATALIE MACMASTER is on that bill! That ought to be a wonderful show, indeed. I've seen Natalie perform twice; and she is a charming explosion of music, energy, and joy. Like Arlo, she comes across as someone who is genuinely nice and glad to see you - like a favorite cousin.

I'm sure you will love the show and I only wish I could be there, too!
